Wesneski placed on IL with right elbow soreness

HOUSTON -- The Astros placed starting pitcher on the 15-day injured list Friday after the right-hander told the team Thursday that his right elbow was sore.

Wesneski’s last appearance came Tuesday, when he lasted four innings in a 4-3 loss at Milwaukee. Wesneski surrendered all four Brewers runs in the first inning but retired seven of the last eight batters he faced.

Manager Joe Espada said Wesneski was still seeing team doctors Friday afternoon and was unable to offer any timetable on the pitcher’s return.

With the Astros beginning a stretch of 17 games in 17 days, Espada said he would stick to his plan of employing a six-man rotation during the span. Espada did not say who the sixth starter would be.

Acquired in the offseason trade that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs, Wesneski is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his first season with his hometown team. Over six starts with the Astros, the Cy-Fair High School product has thrown 32 innings, striking out 29 and walking just six.
