SAN FRANCISCO -- Jeremy Peña snapped an 0-for-24 slump with an RBI single in the 10th inning to break a tie, and Isaac Paredes added a two-run double to send the Astros to a 6-3 win over the Giants in the series opener Monday night at Oracle Park.
Peña jokingly motioned to the dugout that he wanted the ball when he reached first base, but he didn’t stay there for long. Paredes ripped a double into the left-field corner one out later to score LaMonte Wade Jr. and Peña to give the Astros some breathing room.
In the ninth, the Astros were down to their last strike of the game when Cam Smith rolled a single to right field that glanced off the glove of second baseman Osleivis Basabe, allowing pinch-runner Nick Allen to score the tying run from second base. Smith was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Astros starter Hayden Wesneski delivered his longest start since returning from the injured list, throwing seven innings and allowing three earned runs and five hits, including a pair of solo homers. Jung Hoo Lee hit a two-out homer in the fifth, and Drew Gilbert -- the Astros’ 2022 first-round Draft pick -- broke a 2-2 tie with a homer to lead off the seventh.
Yordan Alvarez broke an 0-for-10 slump in the first inning with a double and scored on a Jose Altuve sacrifice fly. Smith’s homer to left-center in the seventh tied the game at 2. Houston wouldn’t have another hit until Smith’s game-tying single in the ninth.
