Peña (left calf strain) heads for 'hopefully minimum' spell on 10-day IL

HOUSTON -- Astros All-Star shortstop was out of the lineup Monday and will be headed to the 10-day injured list with a mild left calf strain, according to manager Joe Espada.

“It’s going to be a minimum -- hopefully minimum -- IL stint,” Espada said following the Astros’ 5-4 loss to the Twins. “Hopefully, it won’t take him very long to get back.”

This will be Peña’s second IL stint of the season after he missed over a month earlier this season with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.

Espada said prior to the game that Peña came in and said he had “general left leg” discomfort, so he was seeing the doctors.

Peña is hitting .295 this season with six home runs and 21 RBIs, but he’s been hitting .307 since coming off the injured list on May 18.

Nick Allen was activated off the 10-day IL on Monday and will likely start at shortstop in Peña’s absence. Allen went on the IL on June 8 with a left hamstring strain and missed 19 games.
