HOUSTON -- Astros shortstop Marwin Gonzalez was removed from Tuesday's 6-5, 11-inning win at Minute Maid Park against the A's with a left elbow and wrist contusion after the first inning.
Oakland center fielder Dustin Fowler attempted to steal second base in the first, and Gonzalez's left arm was caught by the bottom of Fowler's cleats on the tag play when Astros catcher Max Stassi fired in a blazing throw to record the out at second base.
"Marwin's OK," Astros manager AJ Hinch said after the game. "It was a weird play at second. Stassi put the ball right on the money and everything got there to the base at the same time. He got spiked on his wrist. Didn't bend his thumb back, which was my first thought, which was that the cleat caught his glove and his thumb would be in shambles."
Gonzalez, who had planned to bat right-handed against A's starter Sean Manaea, was uncomfortable swinging following the collision and was removed from the game. He received X-rays on the injured arm and results returned negative, according to Gonzalez.
"He hit me straight on my hand," Gonzalez said. "It was half on my hand and half on my glove. It got me pretty good."
Wincing in pain, Gonzalez immediately removed his glove from his hand after Fowler's spiked cleats caught his hand on the slide. The Astros said he is considered day to day.
"My elbow feels a little bit sore," Gonzalez said. "The hand, I'm OK. it was just killing me at the time and in the moment. I think I'm going to be day to day and let's see how I wake up tomorrow and let's see if I'm ready to play tomorrow."
