Comes from a baseball family. Two younger brothers, Nick and Jacob, both play professional baseball. Nick was an infielder with the Phillies, Tigers and Orioles (2021-24), while Jacob is a pitcher in the Texas Rangers organization pitching as high as Frisco (AA) in 2024. His father, Phil, ran track at Eastern Illinois and his mother, Ellen, played volleyball at Eastern Illinois. Phil, Sr., ran a 4:11 mile time in 1987...Nick faced Phil once in his Major League career and singled off him in the eighth inning of a game between the Phillies and Astros, Oct. 5, 2022...Graduated from Chatham Glenwood (Ill.) High School where he was 10-2 with a 0.53 ERA during his senior season in 2011. The ERA set the conference record until his younger brother Jacob broke the record in 2017 (0.21 ERA). Was the winning pitcher in the Class 3A Illinois High School Athletic Association State Championship against DeKalb...Played college baseball at Louisiana Tech University. Departed the school as the baseball program's all-time leader in innings pitched (358.2) and second in strikeouts (324)...Had the name "Spin Rate" on his Players Weekend jersey for Major League Baseball's Players Weekend in 2018. Signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as a free agent at the start of the Spring Training reporting for pitchers and catchers...Pitched for the Rays and Mets posting career-highs in appearances (71), saves (three) and games finished (16)…Posted a career-high 18 holds, with nine each between the two clubs...Was acquired by the Mets from the Rays three weeks shy of the trade deadline on July 9...Primarily threw a cutter (35.5%), curveball (28.8) and sweeper (22.4) with a sinker (9.3) and slider (4.0). Split the season between El Paso (AAA) and San Diego, making his MLB debut on 6/11 vs. KC and becoming the first player selected by the Padres in the 2015 Draft to make the big leagues... At the time of his call-up to the big league squad on 6/11, he ranked tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with 13 saves in 13 opportunities and pitched to a 2.84 ERA (8 ER, 25.1 IP) with 31 SO against nine BB…did not allow a run over his final nine appearances and 10.1 IP for the Chihuahuas... Tossed a perfect eighth inning against the heart of the Royals' order on 6/11 in the seven-pitch big league debut... Began his ML career with an 8.1-scoreless inning streak in his first 10 relief appearances from 6/11-30 with 11 SO against no walks and limiting opposing hitters to .167 overage... During the scoreless streak, earned his first ML save on 6/17 at MIL and his first ML win on 6/21 at CHC...
