WASHINGTON -- Braves right-hander Brandon McCarthy was pulled after five innings Wednesday in Atlanta's 5-3 win over the Nationals with a left shoulder subluxation (partial dislocation). He is listed as day to day, but he does not expect to miss his next scheduled turn in the rotation, next Tuesday against the Phillies.
"There's positions I shouldn't put my arm in. If I'm doing something else, I wouldn't put it in that [position]. In a game situation, sometimes it's just going to happen," McCarthy said.
McCarthy covered first base on an inning-ending ground ball off the bat of Brian Goodwin. First baseman Freddie Freeman fielded the play and tossed to McCarthy. The hurler immediately grabbed his shoulder and called for a trainer, who appeared to pop it back into place.
"It's something that has to be surgically repaired at some point, I just didn't want to do it for this season," McCarthy said.
McCarthy had thrown just 61 pitches before being pulled. He had allowed one run on four hits and two walks against three strikeouts.
This isn't the first time McCarthy has injured his non-throwing shoulder. As a member of the Dodgers last season, he was placed on the 10-day disabled list because of an incident in the weight room that resulted in a separation of the left shoulder.
"Now I know what it is, so it's less of a shock," McCarthy said.
