Braves designate Cahill, promote Eveland

ATLANTA -- The Braves recalled left-handed reliever Dana Eveland before Thursday's series finale against the Padres and designated right-hander Trevor Cahill for assignment.

Cahill has struggled mightily this year with the Braves, posting a 7.52 ERA in 26 1/3 innings and allowing a .330 opponents' batting average.

The Braves signed Eveland to a Minor League contract on Sunday. The 31-year-old has thrown 25 innings in Triple-A this season with Pawtucket and Gwinnett, posting a 1.44 ERA and striking out 23 batters while walking just three over 25 innings.

"[It] feels like a good decision," Eveland said about opting out of his deal with the Red Sox and signing with the Braves. "I opted out on [June 1], and here I am on the 11th.

"This is a pretty cool organization. It's my 10th, unfortunately. Hopefully, I can stick around with [the Braves] for a little while."

Thursday's move comes just two days after the Braves promoted recently acquired right-handed reliever David Aardsma. Entering Thursday's action, Atlanta's bullpen had the highest ERA (4.75) in the Major Leagues.
