ATLANTA -- The Braves gained some much-needed organizational position player depth on Wednesday night, when the club acquired Minor League infielder Jim Jarvis from the Tigers in exchange for right-handed reliever Rafael Montero.

Montero never proved to be the reliever the Braves envisioned when the acquired him after the Astros designated him for assignment in April. The 34-year-old hurler posted a 5.50 ERA over 34 1/3 innings (36 games) for Atlanta. His days with the club seemed to be numbered as he constructed 10.61 ERA in 10 July appearances.

Tigers receive: RHP Rafael Montero
Jarvis, 24, is a University of Alabama graduate who has constructed a .652 OPS over 310 plate appearances with Double-A Erie (Tigers affiliate) this season. He has primarily played shortstop, but Jarvis has made 17 starts at second base and 10 at third base this year.
With Nacho Alvarez (Braves' No. 3 prospect) being the only infielder listed in the top 10 of Atlanta's farm system, per MLB Pipeline, there is definitely a need for the Braves to continue compiling position player depth, with a focus on infielders.
The Braves may continue to focus on adding position players as they attempt to move Marcell Ozuna and closer Raisel Iglesias before Thursday’s 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline. Pierce Johnson is among the other relievers they could look to move, especially after seeing what teams have been willing to trade in attempt to strengthen their bullpen this year.
