Bats batter Rox, but Bradley falters in loss

DENVER -- The last time the D-backs had to deal with a tough loss on the road was April 21 against the Cubs, and Arizona went on to nine of its next 11 games.

Sunday’s 8-7 heartbreaking loss to the Rockies at Coors Field will give the D-backs another chance to show their resiliency.

Arizona seemed on its way to a three-game sweep of the Rockies when it carried a 7-3 lead into the eighth inning with setup man on the mound.

“We felt like we played a really good game,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “But the beauty of baseball is you have to play nine innings and get 27 outs before it’s over.”

The Rockies jumped on Bradley for a single, and then after an error by third baseman cost them a chance at a double play, things spiraled out of control.

Bradley walked in a run and with no outs, and with the bases still loaded, Lovullo faced a decision.

Lefty was loose and ready in the bullpen with the left-handed-hitting coming to the plate. Lovullo thought about going to Chafin but stuck with Bradley.

“I just believed enough in Archie to execute a game plan and elevate some fastballs and drive some fastballs down as part of the game plan,” Lovullo said. “He just got clipped. He made a mistake out over the plate.”

And Tapia didn’t miss it, hitting it into the gap in left-center field for a game-tying, three-run triple.

“I just felt like everything was [an issue],” Bradley said. “Just whatever I did really didn’t work. It sucks. We were looking for a series sweep, and I didn’t have my stuff today. Today is one of those days -- I say it all the time in the role I’m in -- you’ve just got to look at it, figure out what you did and kind of move forward with it.”

Bradley entered the game with a 1.571 WHIP, but as evidenced by the 1.93 ERA he had before Sunday, he usually has been able to work out of the trouble.

This time, he couldn’t.

“I think there was maybe a little loss of focus after the double-play ball,” Lovullo said. “I’m not sure. That’s what I’m assuming. Nobody’s better than Archie at getting things back under control. We’ll probably sit down and have a conversation with him and see where he was mentally, and I know he’s going to grow and learn from this.”

Bradley said he wasn’t distracted by the error, but instead he was hampered by not having his best stuff.

“No, I mean, plays are going to happen,” he said. “It’s not like he didn’t try to make the play on purpose. It just didn’t happen. As a pitcher, you want to pick that guy up, give him another ground ball and a chance to get some more outs. I just really couldn’t do that today."

The D-backs now head to Tampa Bay for a three-game series with the Rays.

“We’ve got to accept that [the loss] happened. We’ve got to understand why it happened, get on the plane and turn the page and get better from it,” Lovullo said. “That’s what I expect of those guys.”
