Marte exits after limping through home run trot

SAN FRANCISCO -- D-backs center fielder gave his team a scare Tuesday night by limping around the bases after drilling a fifth-inning home run off Giants starter Jeff Samardzija.

Fortunately for Marte and the D-backs, it was only a right hamstring cramp. Nevertheless, manager Torey Lovullo immediately removed Marte from the game, which Arizona won, 3-2.

“It’s been something I’ve been feeling since yesterday,” Marte said through an interpreter. “When I ran to first, I felt the cramp I was talking about. … I felt the most prudent thing to do was come out of the game.”

Said Lovullo, “We feel like we dodged a bullet there. When the athlete pulls up like that, you hold your breath. Between the groins and hamstrings in baseball, you’re never sure what it is.”

Tim Locastro replaced Marte in the lineup and occupied left field, while Jarrod Dyson moved from left to center.

Marte hiked his home run total to 28, one behind team leader Eduardo Escobar. Marte also went 2-for-3, lengthening his hitting streak to 10 games.
