The Diamondbacks have designated veteran outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment, the club announced on Sunday. Rookie infielder Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.
Gurriel, a marquee trade addition alongside Gabriel Moreno ahead of Arizona’s 2023 World Series run, was in the third and final year of the $42 million contract he signed to stay with the Diamondbacks after the ‘23 season. The deal included a $14 million club option for 2027.
Gurriel was key in the Diamondbacks’ 2023 season, earning his only All-Star selection while posting a career-high 24 home runs on a .772 OPS. He also hit three long balls with 11 RBIs in the postseason.
2026, however, has been a struggle for the 32-year-old. After tearing his ACL in September 2025, Gurriel did not make his ‘26 debut until April 18. With two other stints on the injured list this season -- for a left hamstring strain and a right adductor strain -- Gurriel has been limited to just 51 games. In that time, the Cuba native has posted a career-worst .544 OPS with just two home runs.
Fernandez will rejoin the club for the third time, with Arizona grappling for the final National League Wild Card with the Padres. The Diamondbacks entered Sunday 1 1/2 games behind San Diego in the standings.
Fernandez has slashed .262/.305/.356 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 65 big league games. He has also provided defensive versatility, with innings at first base, third base and shortstop.
