How D-backs' roster moves will impact pitching

Davies goes 3 1/3 in return; Pfaadt, Frías optioned to Reno; Jameson recalled

PHOENIX -- It was a busy day for the D-backs on Saturday even before they took the field and dropped a 2-1 game to the Red Sox at Chase Field.

There were a pair of roster moves that will impact the rotation and bullpen going forward, and there were a number of ways things could have played out on Saturday. Let’s take a look at what it all means:

Davies is back and Pfaadt is out

In order to make room for Saturday’s starter, Zach Davies, to be activated from the injured list where he had been with a strained left oblique, the D-backs optioned right-hander Brandon Pfaadt to Triple-A Reno.

Davies said he had some extra adrenaline flowing for Saturday, his first start in the big leagues since he suffered his injury on April 8, which led to him not having his best command.

The combination of a patient Red Sox lineup and Davies’ location issues led to an elevated pitch count, which chased Davies at 75 pitches with one out in the fourth.

Pfaadt will be back

Sending Pfaadt down after five starts was not something the D-backs anticipated happening when he was called up.

“We thought this was an opportunity for him to come up, show us what he was capable of doing and what he’d been doing at the Minor League level, and he’d be here for the next 15 years,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.

Pfaadt made five starts for the D-backs and did not have the same pinpoint command he had displayed during his time in the Minors. The command, as well as using his secondary stuff a little more, is what Lovullo said Pfaadt was going to work on in Reno.

There’s little doubt that Pfaadt will be back.

Jameson is back and Frías is out

In addition to the Davies/Pfaadt move, the D-backs recalled right-hander Drey Jameson and optioned reliever Luis Frías.

Jameson lost out to Ryne Nelson for the No. 5 spot in the rotation in Spring Training and opened the year in the bullpen. Following Davies’ injury, he was moved to the rotation before being demoted to Reno on April 24.

For now, the plan is to pitch Jameson out of the bullpen. Ideally the D-backs would like to use Jameson for multiple innings, which would give them the flexibility to move him to the rotation if needed, but with the D-backs in contention, they will use him in short stints if needed.

Henry will keep his spot in the rotation

There were some eyebrows raised when left-hander Tommy Henry came in to start the fifth given that he is a member of the rotation.

Did this mean that Henry was going to lose his starting spot to Jameson?

No, Lovullo said after the game that unless something changes, Henry will start Wednesday night against the Rockies. Henry was used to face five batters, four of them lefties, and threw just 10 pitches.

“We felt like if we were going to use Tommy today, it was going to be in that little pocket of lefties,” Lovullo said. “He did a good job, a really good job.”

Lovullo had two plans for Saturday’s game

The first was the way it played out: Davies would pitch deep enough into the game to where they wouldn’t need a long man out of the bullpen. They would then use Henry to get the lefties out and then he would start Wednesday.

The second was that if Davies got knocked out of the game early, Henry was going to be the long man and pitch as many as 100 pitches if needed and then they would have used Jameson to start next week.

With Henry not having to throw many pitches and Jameson not being used Saturday, Jameson is now available to pitch out of the bullpen the next several days with Henry scheduled to start Wednesday.
