Darling to rejoin Mets' booth vs. Giants

Former pitcher's thyroid cancer has stabilized after May 6 diagnosis

June 3rd, 2019

Former Mets pitcher and current broadcaster Ron Darling shared encouraging news Monday, disclosing via his personal Twitter account that the thyroid cancer he was diagnosed with earlier this spring has “stabilized” for the time being, and that he will return to the SNY booth Tuesday night.

“My doctors have informed me that my thyroid cancer has been stabilized for now,” wrote Darling, “and that I have been cleared to return to work. The doctors will continue to closely monitor me over the next several months to assure my progress remains on the right track.

“I look forward to rejoining my partners Gary [Cohen] and Keith [Hernandez] in the SNY booth to call tomorrow night’s Mets vs. San Francisco Giants game at Citi Field.”

Darling, 58, announced his diagnosis May 6, and he has been absent from the booth since mid-April after undergoing surgery to remove a mass on his chest. The prognosis for Darling was that his cancer was treatable. Darling is an original member of SNY's award-winning broadcast team with Cohen and Hernandez, and he has been analyzing Mets games since 2006. Darling also works as an analyst for MLB Network and TBS. He was a member of the Mets’ pitching staff from 1983-91, compiling a 99-70 record with a 3.50 ERA while helping New York claim its most recent World Series championship in ’86.
