Bailey's ailing biceps may need more time

ARLINGTON -- In a bit of a surprise, closer Andrew Bailey was not available for Saturday's game against the Rangers. The club determined Bailey wouldn't be able to pitch after he threw before the game.

Manager John Farrell felt Bailey could have pitched in an emergency situation on Friday and was anticipating a Saturday return for the righty.

But Bailey needs a little more time to recover from a right biceps injury that has prevented him from pitching since April 28.

"I went out, and played catch normally and I guess it's not ready yet," Bailey said. "I'm very frustrated. I just have to wake up tomorrow and see how it goes."

However, there's a chance the Red Sox might have Bailey take it easy on Sunday, and then have the medical staff examine him when the club returns home Monday.

"At some point we'll have to get him looked at, most likely, first thing Monday morning," Farrell said.

As it turns out, only one save situation has presented itself during Bailey's absence. Joel Hanrahan, who opened the year as Boston's closer, handled that one cleanly.

In 13 games this season, Bailey has a 1.46 ERA and has held opponents to a .140 batting average.
