A's Melvin wins replay challenge

A's manager Bob Melvin successfully challenged a ruling in the seventh inning of Monday night's contest against the Rangers. Umpires initially ruled that Texas leadoff man Shin-Soo Choo reached base safely on a seventh-inning infield single, but overturned the call after speaking with the review officials in New York.

With no outs and no one on, Choo hit a quick comebacker that bounced off A's southpaw Fernando Abad before third baseman Josh Donaldson scooped it up with his bare hand and delivered a strike across the diamond. Thanks to a big stretch at first by Daric Barton, the ball barely beat Choo to first base.

"I heard that he was out," Melvin said. "Based on the replay that I was seeing, I wasn't sure about it but they said that there was one replay that showed he was out. At that point in time, I'm going to challenge it anyway."

Abad went on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning to keep the game knotted at 3, while Choo left the game with an apparent injury after pulling up lame down the first-base line.

It marked the first time out of five tries this year that Melvin had a challenge call overturned under the league's new expanded replay system.
