Blue Jays lose challenge in finale vs. Red Sox

BOSTON -- Blue Jays manager John Gibbons lost his challenge of an out call at second base during the sixth inning of Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Toronto's Kevin Pillar attempted to steal second with one out in the inning. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski made a strong throw to the bag and shortstop Xander Bogaerts got the tag down, but there was some debate about whether he touched Pillar's left hand during a head-first slide.

Gibbons came out to argue the safe call and ultimately decided to use his challenge after a brief conversation with second-base umpire Lance Barksdale. The umpires converged and following a review of three minutes and 30 seconds, it was decided that the call on the field stands.

That meant there was not enough video evidence to overturn the original call on the field. That call ended up having an impact as Toronto's Anthony Gose eventually hit a double off the Green Monster later in the frame. The Blue Jays held a 7-2 lead at the time of the challenge.
