Call overturned as Red Sox win challenge
Ross originally ruled out on Escobar throw, then awarded first base
ST. PETERSBURG -- With a five-run rally already in progress in the top of the first inning Saturday, Red Sox manager John Farrell didn't want to see it end.
When David Ross hit a two-out grounder into the hole, Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar tried to get the out at first.
Originally, first-base umpire Angel Hernandez gave it to him.
But Farrell was quick to come out for a challenge. The replay clearly showed that Ross stepped on first before James Loney caught the throw.
The play was overturned after a review of one minute, three seconds.
Jackie Bradley Jr. wound up popping up to end the inning. However, thanks to the overturned call, Rays starter David Price had to throw an extra five pitches, running his total to 34 for the inning.
