Call stands in fifth after Blue Jays challenge
Tribe's Cabrera called safe on steal of second after tag attempt by Lawrie
TORONTO -- Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was unsuccessful in his challenge of a stolen base by Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera during the fifth inning of Toronto's 15-4 loss to the Indians on Wednesday night.
With the Indians leading, 4-0, Cabrera attempted to steal second with one out in the fifth. The throw from Toronto catcher Josh Thole arrived in time, but second baseman Brett Lawrie appeared to miss the initial tag.
Gibbons came out of the dugout, and the Blue Jays decided to challenge the call because they felt Lawrie tagged Cabrera's left foot before his other leg hit the bag.
"We went off Brett's reaction, really," Gibbons said. "I was surprised by it. This is not a perfect science. … They make that call in New York."
The umpires convened, and after two minutes and 35 seconds it was ruled that the call on the field stood.
