Cards lose challenge as safe call at first stands
PHOENIX -- The Cardinals lost their challenge in the second inning of Saturday night's 5-2 loss to the D-backs at Chase Field.
Manager Mike Matheny initiated a review of a bang-bang play at first base between Arizona runner Cliff Pennington and starter Lance Lynn, who was covering the base. Lynn took a throw from first baseman Matt Adams, who snared Pennington's grounder on a backhanded play.
First-base umpire Jordan Baker called Pennington safe, and after a review, the play was ruled as stands. Matheny is now 12-19 when initiating challenges this season. The call did not hurt the Cardinals in the inning, as Lynn retired the next two batters he faced to end the frame.
