Out call at first overturned to benefit Mets

Lagares safe upon review; Duda scores two batters later on two-out single

ATLANTA -- Manager Terry Collins and the Mets are replay naturals.

Collins improved to 2-0 in replay challenges on Tuesday, after umpires overturned a call in the eighth inning against the Braves at Turner Field.

With a man on first and one out, Juan Lagares hit a comebacker that glanced off pitcher Ian Thomas and rolled back toward the plate. Thomas eventually found the ball, turned and fired to first, where umpire Mark Ripperger called Lagares out.

Collins raced out of the dugout and, after waiting to receive a signal from bench coach Bob Geren, challenged the play. Exactly three minutes later, the umpires overturned the call.

The Mets were also successful on their only other replay challenge last week. In that one, Lagares was initially called out on a similar play at second base, before umpires consulted video and reversed the call. That decision loomed large, ultimately leading to Ike Davis' walk-off grand slam against the Reds.

Tuesday's reversal was also impactful, if not to quite the same extent. After the challenge, Ruben Tejada -- who otherwise might not have batted in the inning -- came through with a two-out RBI single, scoring Lucas Duda to extend the Mets' lead to 4-0.
