Giants challenge pair of calls, get one overturned

DENVER -- The Giants broke even on video review challenges Tuesday night, as a successful bid by manager Bruce Bochy helped generate some fifth-inning offense before another challenge proved fruitless.

First, Bochy successfully challenged a fifth-inning call by third-base umpire Bill Miller, changing a foul line drive hit by San Francisco's Tyler Colvin into a double.

With one out in the fifth inning, Brandon Crawford on first base and Colorado clinging to a 1-0 lead, Colvin hit a liner that landed down the left-field line and appeared to raise a puff of chalk -- which would have meant the ball was fair. Miller, however, signaled foul.

Video reviews of the play provided sufficient evidence to overturn the call. Colvin was awarded second base while Crawford was moved to third.

The turn of events paid off for the Giants, who proceeded to score three runs as Gregor Blanco lashed a two-out, two-run triple and came home on Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki's fielding error.

Bochy challenged another call in the sixth, claiming that Colorado's Drew Stubbs pulled into second base after a throw arrived from Madison Bumgarner, who was trying to record a forceout on DJ LeMahieu's bunt. This time, the call stood.

On the second replay, the one the Giants "lost," Bochy said, "You look at the big board and it looks like his [Crawford's] foot was on the base."

Bochy has successfully challenged seven calls in 11 attempts this season.
