Indians win challenge after Tigers' homer confirmed

CLEVELAND -- A pair of plays were reviewed during Tuesday night's tilt between the Indians and Tigers.

In the fifth inning, a home run by Tigers catcher Alex Avila was confirmed by a crew chief review.

Avila sent a 2-2 pitch from Indians starter Trevor Bauer out to deep center field during his second plate appearance of the game. The ball made it over the wall but bounced off the railing and back onto the field. Avila, unsure of whether the hit was a home run or not, slid into third base before being waved home by the umpires.

Soon after, the ruling on the field was confirmed by a replay review. It was his third home run of the season, trimming the Indians' advantage to 5-2.

In the sixth inning, Indians manager Terry Francona challenged a fielder's choice that was then ruled to be a double play.

With one out and men on first and second, Detroit infielder Nick Castellanos hit a grounder to Nick Swisher at first base. Swisher flipped it to Asdrubal Cabrera at second for the forceout, and Cabrera then threw it to Bauer, who moved in to cover first.

First-base umpire Tim Timmons ruled Castellanos safe. However, upon further review, the call was overturned and the inning was over.

Francona improved to 4-for-10 on managerial challenges.
