Marlins, Dodgers both win challenges at second

Umpires overturn Gordon stolen base; Puig awarded steal after review

MIAMI -- Four pitches into Friday night's game, the Marlins had their quickest replay challenge of the season. It turned out to be a successful one.

And in the eighth inning, it was the Dodgers' turn to get a call go their way on an overturn. Both challenge plays came during steal attempts at second base.

In the first inning, Miami manager Mike Redmond challenged a stolen-base attempt by Dee Gordon of the Dodgers. Gordon led the game off with an infield single. Two pitches later, the speedster attempted to steal second, and he was initially called safe by umpire CB Bucknor.

The Marlins felt the play was close enough to look at.

"Sometimes those outs early on are bigger than later in the game at some point," Redmond said. "That looked like it could be a momentum-turner if they score right out of the chute. That was a big out for us. They have a lot of speed. They're really aggressive on the bases. We've got to hold them in check."

Replays showed Miami second baseman Derek Dietrich applied the tag on Gordon. Actually, during the slide, Gordon's lead foot went into Dietrich's foot just short of the bag.

The review lasted one minute and 39 seconds before the play was overturned. It marked only the second time this season that Gordon was caught stealing.

In the eighth inning, Bucknor again was involved in a call that was overturned. Yasiel Puig attempted to steal second, and again catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia's throw was handled by Dietrich.

Bucknor called Puig out. But after a two-minute, 28-second review, the call was overturned.

"CB said he came off the base," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "To us, he never came off the base. I guess that's what the replay showed."
