Twins successfully challenge transfer call

BALTIMORE -- Twins manager Ron Gardenhire won a replay challenge at second base in the fourth inning of Saturday's game against the Orioles.

With Trevor Plouffe at first base and nobody out, Kurt Suzuki hit a ground ball to shortstop J.J. Hardy, who flipped to second baseman Jonathan Schoop to try to turn a double play. Schoop couldn't handle the toss from Hardy, but Plouffe was initially ruled out by second-base umpire Mark Wegner.

But Gardenhire came out to challenge the play, and it was overturned after a brief review. Schoop was charged with an error as a result. Gardenhire also improved to 16-15 in replay challenges this season.

The Twins, though, couldn't capitalize on the overturned call, as Eduardo Escobar grounded into a fielder's choice, Jordan Schafer lined out to shortstop and Danny Santana struck out to end the inning.
