Out call in ninth confirmed in O's-Rays clash

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays manager Joe Maddon said he had nothing to lose by challenging the out call at first base in his team's half of the ninth inning during a 5-3 loss to the Orioles on Tuesday night.

Ryan Hanigan's bunt advanced David DeJesus and pinch-runner Sean Rodriguez, representing the potential tying runs, into scoring position.

It appeared that Maddon was questioning whether second baseman Ryan Flaherty, who was covering first, had his foot on the bag when receiving the throw from third baseman Manny Machado.

"Why not?" Maddon said. "I had an opportunity to find out without question if he [Hanigan] was out or safe."

It took just 47 seconds to confirm the umpire's call that Hanigan was out.
