Padres' challenge goes unrewarded

LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Rymer Liriano did some big things Wednesday against the Dodgers -- he got two hits, made a diving catch and took a walk, staying away from some close pitches.

The Padres' right fielder also made a mistake, trying to take third base on a ball in the dirt in front of the plate in the eighth inning, which turned into a manager's challenge.

Liriano was tagged out at third base trying to advance when a Brian Wilson pitch momentarily got away from catcher A.J. Ellis. Ellis grabbed the ball and threw to third baseman Justin Turner, who applied the tag to Liriano for the second out of the inning.

San Diego manager Bud Black decided to use his manager's challenge, but the call was confirmed on the field following a quick review.

The inning ended with the Padres holding a 4-1 lead, and that was the final score.
