Washington challenges Ortiz's HR; call confirmed
Rangers manager had feeling ball was fair, but asked umps to review the play
BOSTON -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said he had no doubts when he smashed his three-run home run down the right-field line in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game.
"No, no, it was pretty close, but I knew it was fair." Ortiz said.
Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos thought it was a foul ball. First-base umpire Jerry Meals ruled otherwise and called it fair. The home run gave the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.
Manager Ron Washington suspected it was fair. But he still went out and asked the umpires to take a look at the replay. The review took 44 seconds, and the ruling was confirmed.
"I thought it was fair, but I asked them to look at it in case I was wrong," Washington said.
"I wanted to make sure it was fair," Ortiz said. "I stayed watching it. I don't know why I keep hitting balls down the line like that."
