Rays challenge infield single, but safe call stands

Angels' Kendrick ruled safe following replay review in eighth inning

ANAHIEM -- Joe Maddon challenged and lost on an close call in the eighth inning of Friday night's Rays-Angels contest at Angel Stadium.

Howie Kendrick grounded to shortstop Yunel Escobar and beat the throw to first. The Rays manager felt otherwise and issued a challenge.

After a review that lasted two minutes and seven seconds, the call on the field stood.

"I think that's one of those inconclusive calls where the call on the field is going to stand, whichever way that play was [originally] called," Maddon said.

The Rays have had 16 challenges this season. Six have been overturned, five have stood, and five have been confirmed.
