Rays lose challenge on potential double play

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays used their challenge on a potential inning-ending double-play ball in the third inning of Monday's series opener against the Brewers.

With Jean Segura on first and one out in the top of the third, Carlos Gomez chopped a ball to Evan Longoria at third. Longoria threw to Logan Forsythe at second to retire Segura, but Gomez was called safe at first ahead of Forsythe's relay.

Manager Joe Maddon challenged first-base umpire Bill Welke's ruling, and after a 2 minute, 12 second review, the safe call stood.

"Got it totally wrong," Maddon said. "I came down, I saw the replay, I said, 'He's -- he's safe.' So I was just waiting for the formality -- he was safe. We blew it. We messed that one up."

That meant the Rays couldn't challenge when, in the very next at-bat, catcher Jose Molina looked like he might have caught Gomez stealing second. Gomez was called safe on a bang-bang play.

It ended up not mattering, though, as starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi retired Jonathan Lucroy on a groundout to third to end the inning, stranding Gomez.
