Rays lose challenge on steal attempt
Maddon asks for review in ninth inning, but out call stands
BOSTON -- Joe Maddon challenged an out call in the ninth inning of the second game of the Rays-Red Sox doubleheader at Fenway Park.
With the Rays holding a 6-5 lead, Desmond Jennings was called out trying to steal second base with two outs and Evan Longoria at the plate.
After a review that lasted one minute and 43 seconds, the call on the field stood.
"At that point, why would you not [challenge]?" Maddon said after his club closed out its second one-run victory of the day. "It's that close. We were kind of in that ambivalent mode. We had no idea what was going to happen.
"It was one of those situations that you see a lot of -- that we're learning -- is that a call in the field is going to stand pretty much when there's nothing conclusive. However, you don't know how they're going to read it. So having Desmond at second with Longo hitting, there's nothing to lose right there."
Maddon has had 10 challenges on the season, three have been overturned, four have stood, and three have been confirmed.
