Red Sox win one challenge, lose another vs. Indians

CLEVELAND -- A pair of calls were challenged by the Red Sox during their game with the Indians on Monday night at Progressive Field. One went in their favor, while the other did not.

With no outs and a man on first in the third inning, Tribe outfielder Michael Brantley hit a grounder to first baseman Brock Holt. Holt threw the ball to Stephen Drew at second for the forceout, and Drew threw it back for a chance at a double play, but Brantley was ruled safe by first-base umpire Gerry Davis.

Red Sox manager John Farrell issued a managerial challenge, and after a minute and 30 seconds of replay review, the initial call was overturned and Brantley was out on a 3-6-3 double play.

Then, with two outs in the seventh, Indians third baseman Mike Aviles was called safe on an attempted steal of second base. Because Farrell had won the previous decision, he was able to make another manager's challenge.

After a review of two minutes and 55 seconds, the ruling was that the call would stand and Aviles remained safe at second.

"[Drew] said he tagged him and it looked like he tagged him on the replay, so I don't know, but apparently it was inconclusive to the people who count, and that's all that matters at the end of the day," Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski said.
