Replay confirms out at plate in Nats-Brewers contest

WASHINGTON -- Second-base umpire Bill Miller issued a crew chief review in the bottom of the first inning of Saturday night's contest between the Nationals and Brewers.

Washington posted five runs in the frame before pitcher Tanner Roark stepped to the plate with one out. Ian Desmond was standing on third base and Wilson Ramos was on first. Roark laid a bunt down to the right side of the infield, and Desmond took off for home on a delayed squeeze.

Reliever Marco Estrada, who replaced starter Matt Garza after one-third of an inning, fielded the ball and flipped to catcher Jonathan Lucroy with his glove. Desmond attempted to slide around Lucroy, but the catcher successfully executed the tag to prevent a sixth run from scoring.

Nationals manager Matt Williams jogged onto the field and raised a question about whether Lucroy was in violation of Rule 7.13, which dictates that a catcher cannot block the plate without the ball. Miller and the rest of his crew went to the replay and confirmed the call for the second out of the inning.
