Gardenhire wins one challenge, loses another

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ron Gardenhire won a challenge in the sixth inning of Thursday's game against the Indians to help Minnesota get out of a potential jam, and the Twins manager lost a second challenge an inning later.

With Michael Brantley at first base and two outs in the sixth after Twins center fielder Jordan Schafer dropped a line drive for an error, Carlos Santana roped a drive down the right-field line off right-hander Phil Hughes. Right fielder Oswaldo Arcia made a strong throw into second base, but umpire CB Bucknor ruled that Santana was safe at second.

Gardenhire asked for the play to be reviewed. After just 34 seconds, it was determined shortstop Danny Santana made the tag in time to get Carlos Santana, and the call was overturned for the final out of the inning.

"We were screaming for him to get the ball in, but he saw the runner going into second while our thoughts were all about the runner rounding third base," Gardenhire said. "But he read it and saw it and thought he had a chance to get the guy out, and made a nice throw."

Gardenhire lost his challenge in the seventh, however, as Schafer was ruled out by Bucknor on a stolen-base attempt at second base, and the call was confirmed after a 40-second review. It was the first time in seven attempts Schafer had been caught stealing while with the Twins.

Gardenhire is now 15-of-29 on challenges this season.
