Two safe-call reviews don't go Nationals' way
Williams' challenge unsuccessful; Bochy gets call overturned
SAN FRANCISCO -- A pair of video replay reviews favored the Giants in their game Tuesday night against the Nationals.
In the third inning, Washington manager Matt Williams was unable to get a third-inning call overturned. With Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner on first base, Angel Pagan hit a slow roller toward second baseman Danny Espinosa. After tagging out Bumgarner, Espinosa quickly threw to first base, where umpire Phil Cuzzi ruled Pagan safe. Williams asked for a review of the play, and umpires ruled that the play would stand.
Three innings later, Washington had Adam LaRoche on third base with two outs when Ian Desmond grounded to Giants first baseman Michael Morse, who backhanded the ball but briefly fumbled it. Regaining control of the ball, Morse flipped it to Bumgarner, who covered first base. Desmond initially was ruled safe, but Bumgarner motioned for Giants manager Bruce Bochy to request a review, certain that he stepped on the bag before Desmond. After a brief review, the call was overturned, denying Washington a run.
