Ump exits Jays-Mets game after foul to mask

Foster gives way after finishing top of 3rd behind plate

NEW YORK -- Home plate umpire Marty Foster left Monday night's Blue Jays-Mets game at Citi Field in the third inning after being struck in the facemask by a foul ball.

Foster, a 16-year veteran, completed the top of the third inning behind the plate after taking the shot with one out. Toronto's Josh Donaldson fouled off a 98-mph fastball from Noah Syndergaard.

Foster was examined on the field for several minutes before Donaldson flied out to end the at-bat. Two batters later, Edwin Encarnacion struck out to end the frame. Foster did not return for the bottom of the inning.

Mike Winters, who started the game at second base, replaced Foster behind the plate. Mike Muchlinski remained stationed at first base, with Mark Wegner at third.
