Umpires review for collision-rule violation in Minnesota
Replay confirms that Pinto did not illegally block plate from Lowrie
MINNEAPOLIS -- An umpire review was initiated in the sixth inning of Oakland's 6-1 win over the Twins on Thursday, as umpires used replay to determine whether catcher Josmil Pinto illegally blocked home plate from a Jed Lowrie slide.
With right-hander Samuel Deduno on the mound, Josh Donaldson laced an RBI single to center field to plate Sam Fuld. Lowrie also tried to score from second on the play, but was ruled out at home by home-plate umpire Adam Hamari on a strong throw from Aaron Hicks.
A's manager Bob Melvin asked the umpires to take a look at the play but didn't use a challenge, as it was an umpire review. The umpires reviewed whether there was a violation of Official Baseball Rule 7.13, which is new this season and states that unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score.
After a review, it was determined that rule was properly adhered to, and Lowrie was out at home with the play being confirmed.
