Relive All-Stars bringing power to SD in '92

SAN DIEGO -- Nineteen future Hall of Famers (and counting) converged on San Diego in July 1992. They staged a Midsummer Classic slugfest for the ages.

At the time, it was the second highest scoring All-Star Game in Major League history, trailing only the 1954 edition. (It now ranks third, with '98 in the top spot.) Ultimately, the American League bested the National League for a fifth straight season with a 13-6 victory.

But the game is remembered more for its star power than for the final score:

• An NL outfield with Tony Gwynn and Barry Bonds? Check
• An AL infield of Wade Boggs, Cal Ripken Jr., Roberto Alomar and Mark McGwire? Check
• Six future Hall of Fame pitchers on the mound -- plus peak Roger Clemens? Check

The hometown Padres had their share of standout performers in the game as well. Fred McGriff went 2-for-3. Tony Fernandez, in the fourth of his five All-Star Games, singled and scored. Gwynn, meanwhile, was walked once and went hitless in two at-bats. But he recorded two outfield assists, catching Ripken and Travis Fryman as they tested his arm looking to stretch singles into doubles.

Those efforts wouldn't be enough. The AL jumped out to an early lead, and Ken Griffey Jr. took home MVP honors. Griffey hit an RBI single in the first off Tom Glavine, a homer in the third off Greg Maddux and a leadoff double in the sixth off Bob Tewksbury. Amid plenty of star power, it was Griffey who shined brightest.
