Harper sets jersey-sale record in 24 hours

March 4th, 2019

Bryce Harper set a Major League record when he landed a 13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies, who officially introduced their newest right fielder on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park.

But a day later, Harper has already set another remarkable record: His No. 3 Phillies jersey is the top-selling jersey of all-time for any player in any sport within 24 hours of launch, according to Fanatics.

Harper's signing has also led to a rush to the ticket windows at Citizens Bank Park, as well as online, to purchase tickets for the 2019 season. According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, by Friday the Phillies had sold about 100,000 tickets since word of the agreement with Harper broke.

Harper wore No. 34 during his seven seasons with the Nationals, a number that he has said he chose because the two digits add to 7, which was Mickey Mantle's number. Harper declined to wear No. 34 with the Phillies out of respect and admiration for Hall of Fame right-hander Roy Halladay, who passed away in an airplane accident in November 2017.

Harper is scheduled to make his debut in a Phillies uniform Saturday against the Blue Jays at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, Fla. There will surely be many fans donning the new Harper jerseys in the crowd, as there will be when the Phillies open the regular season against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park on March 28.
