Bucs acquire versatile Lombardozzi from O's

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Pirates added to their cache of infield candidates on Tuesday, acquiring Steve Lombardozzi from the Orioles for cash considerations. Lombardozzi is not the player Baltimore still owes Pittsburgh for its Jan. 27 trade for Travis Snider.

Lombardozzi is a 26-year-old switch-hitter who batted .288 in 20 games with the O's last season and has a career average of .266 in 277 games, many of them as a rotating regular with the 2012 Washington Nationals.

Lombardozzi, who has been invited to Spring Training, fits the versatile profile prioritized all offseason by the Bucs. During his limited big league career, he has started 166 games at four different positions, including second base, third base, shortstop and left field.

While spending most of the 2014 season with Triple-A Norfolk, Lombardozzi reprised that role by appearing in 38 games at second, 22 in left, 16 at third and five at short.

Lombardozzi's father, Steve Sr., was a comparable player in the late '80s with the Twins and the Astros, playing 446 games at three different infield positions. Lombardozzi Sr. was a career .233 hitter.
