Full name is Garrett Getts Whitlock...Married to his wife, Jordan...Pitched two seasons (2016-17) at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, going 7-11 with two saves and a 3.56 ERA in 42 games (eight starts)...Begins 2022 as one of only four former University of Alabama-Birmingham players to appear in MLB...He joins Chris Hammond (1990-2006), Hector Villanueva (1993-96) and Charlie Moore (1973-87)...Pitched for Chatham in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2016...Made four scoreless relief appearances for the Anglers (6.0 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 8 SO)...Graduated from Providence Christian Academy (GA).

2022

Began the season in the bullpen...On Opening Day at NYY (4/8), tossed scoreless sixth and seventh innings before allowing one run in the eighth (2.1 IP, 2 H, 4 SO). On 4/10, agreed with BOS on a four-year contract extension that spans the 2023-26 seasons, with club options for 2027 and 2028. Did not allow a hit over 4.0 scoreless innings to earn the win in relief on 4/12 at DET (BB, 2 SO, 39 pitches)... Became the first pitcher in Sox history to throw fewer than 40 pitches in a hitless relief outing of at least 4.0 innings...Was the 16th pitcher in MLB history to do so, the first since Derek Lowe on 4/20/13 with TEX vs. SEA. Earned his first save of the season on 4/19 vs. TOR, tossing a perfect ninth inning. Made his first MLB start on 4/23 at TOR...Was his first professional start since 7/3/19 with Double-A Trenton (NYY) at Portland (BOS)...Tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, limiting the Blue Jays to one hit with seven SO. Reinstated from the IL on 7/15 and pitched only in relief for the remainder of the season...Did not allow a run in any of his first 4 appearances after being reinstated, spanning 7/15-25 (6.0 IP, H, 9 SO). Tossed perfect eighth and ninth innings on 7/25 vs. CLE to earn his second save of 2022 (2.0 IP, 2 SO)...Picked up his third save on 7/28 vs. CLE (2.0 IP, 2 H, R, BB, SO). Retired each of his first 8 batters faced on 8/6 at KC, including perfect seventh and eighth innings, before allowing a walk-off solo HR to Nick Pratto with two outs in the ninth. Retired six of his seven batters faced in the ninth and 10th innings on 8/12 vs. NYY, earning the win in the Sox’ 3-2 victory (2.0 IP, BB, 3 SO)...Struck out Josh Donaldson and Gleyber Torres to strand two runners and preserve a 2-2 tie. Tossed a perfect ninth inning on 8/14 vs. NYY (2 SO) to earn his fourth save of the season in the Sox’ 3-0 win. Retired six of his seven batters faced in scoreless seventh and eighth innings on 8/24 vs. TOR (2.0 IP, H, 2 SO). Picked up the save on 8/26 vs. TB after retiring each of his three batters faced in the ninth inning (SO). Placed on the 15-Day IL on 9/21 with a right hip impingement and missed the remainder of the season. Underwent a successful right hip arthroscopy on 9/26, performed by Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

2021

Made his ML debut and his first ML Opening Day roster in his 1st season in the Red Sox organization, after the club selected him from the Yankees in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft...Also attended his first ML Spring Training camp...Went 8-4 with two saves, a 1.96 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 46 outings (73.1 IP, 64 H, 16 ER, 17 BB, 81 SO)...Led the Red Sox in relief innings (73.1)...His 1.96 ERA led all Sox pitchers (min. 15.0 IP)...Became only the 10th Red Sox pitcher in the Live Ball Era (since 1920) to throw 70.0+ innings and record a sub.2.00 ERA (see table on right)...Made 24 scoreless appearances of more than 1.0 inning, the most in the majors and the most by a Red Sox pitcher since Greg Harris in 1993 (also 24)...Was one of 30 rookies to throw 70.0+ innings in 2021...Among that group, ranked in the top 3 in ERA (1st, 1.96), opponent OBP (1st, .282), WHIP (2nd, 1.10), walk rate (3rd, 5.7%), and opponent OPS (3rd, .631)...Posted a sub-1.00 ERA in April (0.00, 13.1 IP), June (0.66, 13.2 IP) and July (0.75, 12.0 IP)...Made his ML debut on 4/4 vs. BAL and threw 3.1 scoreless innings (3 H, 0 BB, 5 SO)...Is the only Red Sox pitcher ever to allow 0 runs, issue 0 walks and strike out 5+ batters in a ML debut...Began his ML career with a 13.1-inning scoreless streak that spanned all six of his April outings...Had the longest scoreless innings streak by a Red Sox to begin a career since Austin Maddox in 2017 (16.1 IP)...Retired 25 straight batters faced between his outings from 4/4-23, the longest streak for a Red Sox pitcher since Chris Sale also retired 25 straight in June 2019...Through July, was 4-1 with a 1.26 ERA (7 ER/50.0 IP)...That is the 3rd-lowest ERA by a Red Sox pitcher through 50.0 career innings since ER became an official stat (Boo Ferriss-0.54, Hideki Okajima-0.90) (source: Elias)...Placed on the 10-day IL with a right pectoral strain on 9/21...Reinstated on 10/3 prior to the Sox’ final game of the regular season and threw a perfect 7th inning that day (2 SO), helping the Sox clinch a Postseason berth.

POSTSEASON: Appeared in five games and went 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, and .143 opponent AVG (8.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 SO)...Made three consecutive scoreless and hitless appearances beginning with Game 3 of the ALDS...Recorded the final three outs of the Sox’ Wild Card Game win over the Yankees (1.0 IP, 1 R)...Pitched in Games 3 and 4 of the ALDS vs. TB, allowing 0 hits and 0 runs in 3.1 IP (1 BB, 3 SO)...Earned the win in the clinching game with 2.0 perfect innings...Threw 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings in Game 2 of the ALCS at HOU...Also pitched in Game 4, allowing a tying HR to José Altuve in the eighth inning.

2019-2020

Underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2019, missing the remainder of that season and all of 2020...Has reached as high as the Double-A level, most recently in 2019 when he spent the entire season with Trenton and posted a 3.07 ERA (24 ER/70.1 IP) in 14 starts.

2018

In 2018, his 1.86 ERA (25 ER/120.2 IP) was the 2nd-lowest among Yankees minor leaguers...Was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for 4/30-5/6.
