ST. PETERSBURG -- doesn’t show much emotion, but he couldn’t help but to get excited when Rays manager Kevin Cash called him to share the news that he had been added to the 2019 American League All-Star team.

“[Cash] didn’t really make a big deal out of it and went about it in a very Cash way,” Lowe said. “I was extremely excited and it’s a huge honor.”

Getting named to the All-Star team is yet another box that Lowe has been able to check off this season. During Spring Training, the Rays decided to offer the 24-year-old a contract extension, signing him to a six-year, $24 million deal with a pair of club options. Lowe has since responded with a team-leading 16 home runs and 49 RBIs, and he is the early front-runner for the AL Rookie of the Year Award.

“He’s had a good year,” Cash said. “A lot of things have gone well for Brandon, and by his doing. At every level he’s been at, there’s probably been somebody ahead of him to start Opening Day, and that just shows a lot about him the person and the way he works and how talented he is.”

During his career, Lowe overcame being lightly recruited out of Nansemond River High School in Suffolk, Va., and a broken left fibula while at Maryland before the Rays selected him in the third round of the 2015 Draft.

Through it all, being named an All-Star was something that Lowe dreamed of. On Wednesday, it became a reality.

“It’s the icing on the cake, I’d say,” Lowe said. “The dream is always to be a big leaguer, so I got here. And to keep performing and be able to go out there and take the field with some of the guys that will be out there will be very special.”

Lowe is the third Rays player named to this season's AL All-Star squad, joining and . Over the last year, Meadows and Lowe, who are considered two of Tampa Bay's top young players, have developed a strong friendship.

“He’s had a heck of a year on the field and at the plate,” Meadows said. “I’m excited for him to join us. It’s going to be a fun flight. He deserves it.”

Despite dealing with a right shin issue, Lowe said that the plan is for him to make the trip to Cleveland, even if he’s not able to participate in the game. He noted having a chance to talk to players like Mike Trout will be a highlight of the trip.

“What he’s done throughout the game has been nothing short of incredible,” Lowe said of Trout. “I would love to pick his brain and see just what goes on in his head.”

While all of the success Lowe is having this season might come as a surprise to many around the league, Lowe, who is pretty quiet and reserved, says that this is just the type of expectation that he has set for himself throughout his career.

“It’s nice to achieve goals that I’ve set,” Lowe said. “It’s nothing short of what I’ve expected out of myself, and [I'm] really happy with our performance so far and hope I can keep building on what I’ve done.”

Will anything he accomplishes surprise Lowe?

“Not yet,” Lowe joked. “Maybe in the offseason.”
