Storm moves CLE-TB from Tues. to Wed.

July 5th, 2021

ST. PETERSBURG -- Due to the projected path of Tropical Storm Elsa, the Rays and Major League Baseball announced Monday that Tampa Bay’s game against Cleveland on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field has been postponed.

The game between the Rays and Indians has been rescheduled for Wednesday as part of a traditional, single-admission doubleheader beginning at 12:10 p.m. ET. The second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1. Both games of the doubleheader will be seven innings, and both clubs will be permitted to add a 27th player to their active rosters for the day.

Single-game tickets for Wednesday will be valid for both games of the doubleheader, the Rays announced, with no exchange necessary. Fans who purchased tickets through raysbaseball.com, the MLB Ballpark app or over the phone for Tuesday’s postponed game will receive a credit to their Rays ticket account, which can be used toward any 2021 regular-season home game at Tropicana Field, including Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Rays right-hander Michael Wacha had been scheduled to start Tuesday night against Indians righty J.C. Mejia. Tampa Bay was likely to activate left-hander Josh Fleming from the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday afternoon against Cleveland lefty Sam Hentges. It is unclear how the postponement will affect each club’s pitching plans.

Tropicana Field’s gates will open to fans at 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday. It will be the fourth doubleheader in the ballpark’s history. The Rays and Tigers split a doubleheader on Sept. 30, 2004, the result of rescheduling in the wake of Hurricane Frances. The Rays and A’s played a twin bill on June 10, 2017, MLB’s first scheduled doubleheader since 2011. And last Aug. 8, the Rays and Yankees split a doubleheader due to schedule changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the postponement, the Rays also changed their promotional schedule; the Austin Meadows bobblehead giveaway, initially slated for Tuesday, is now scheduled for the Rays’ July 20 game against the Orioles.
