ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays put together a late-inning rally Friday night. Unfortunately, that effort couldn't carry them to a win as they took a 3-2, 10-inning loss to the White Sox at Tropicana Field.
Yoan Moncada's RBI double in the 10th drove home the winning run, snapping the Rays' three-game winning streak.
"I thought we battled really well," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "... The part you really like is that they find a way to make it interesting. Tie the game and get us into extra innings -- just came up a hair short."

Tampa Bay's undoing began when Nicky Delmonico doubled off Jose Alvarado with two outs in the 10th. Adam Engel was inserted to pinch-run. Moncada roped a 2-1 fastball to left field over Jake Bauers' head. Engel scored easily with what turned out to be the winning run.

"Just didn't get a great first step," Bauers said. "Tried to recover. And then obviously, [it was] hit pretty hard. Once I got back there it was little over my head. I don't know, if I get another run at it, a better first step -- maybe I catch it, maybe I don't. It is what it is."
Pitching with a 2-0 lead thanks to Jose Abreu's two-run homer off Jaime Schultz in the sixth, White Sox starter Lucas Giolito handcuffed the Rays. Through seven innings, the Rays had just one hit, but typical of the 2018 squad, they found a way to fight back.
Daniel Robertson doubled to start the Rays' rally in the eighth inning. Joey Wendle followed with an RBI single to left. Wendle then stole second and moved to third on a Juan Minaya wild pitch, bringing Mallex Smith to the plate. When the count reached 2-1, Wendle broke for home and Smith dropped down a suicide squeeze bunt to plate the tying run.

"Mallex did a tremendous job of executing," Cash said. "He works on his bunting a lot. It's nice for it to come into play and have a situation where we can get a big run at the time."
Coming back the way the Rays did made Friday night's loss sting.
"It's for sure frustrating," Bauers said. "... It's another good battle back, just didn't quite finish it out this time."
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Rays "opener" Ryne Stanek made his fourth start in a nine-game period, and he pitched for the eighth time in a 13-day span. Did that usage affect his performance? Hardly. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out the first five batters of the game and made his exit after throwing 23 pitches, 16 for strikes.

"It felt pretty good throwing the ball pretty much where I wanted," Stanek said. "... Everything felt pretty good today."
ROBERTSON LEAVES GAME
Robertson suffered a left thumb sprain when sliding headfirst on his leadoff double in the eighth, but he stayed in and came around to score on Wendle's single. Willy Adames took over at shortstop in the top of the ninth inning, and Robertson will be re-evaluated Saturday.

"We'll get an MRI tomorrow morning to see the severity of it," Robertson said. "And just kind of go from there. I don't have any other info right now. … It's not ideal. I'll probably miss some time, and we'll know what that time is tomorrow."

UP NEXT
Blake Snell will return from the disabled list to start Saturday night when the Rays host the White Sox in a 6:10 p.m. ET contest at Tropicana Field. Austin Pruitt, who pitched two perfect innings in relief Friday night, was optioned to Triple-A Durham after the game to open a roster spot. Snell is 2-0 with a 0.59 ERA in three career starts against the White Sox -- all on the road. Left-hander Carlos Rodon will start for the White Sox.
