CLEVELAND -- The Rays placed Steve Pearce on the disabled list on Tuesday with a strained right hamstring, but they did get some good news on outfielder Mikie Mahtook, whose fractured left hand did not require surgery.
The Rays have recalled infielder Nick Franklin and right-hander Ryan Garton from Triple-A Durham to take Pearce's and Mahtook's spots on the 25-man roster.
Pearce flew out in the ninth inning of Monday night's 7-4 Rays loss to the Indians and came up lame, grabbing his right hamstring. He told reporters after the game that the club planned to take a wait-and-see approach with his injury. While the strength in Pearce's leg is good, he was not walking well on Tuesday.
"Ultimately I've got a bad hamstring," Pearce said. "So we're going to go to the DL, let it get better and come back ready to go. I don't want it to linger. If we can just take two weeks off and get it right, then I think that's the right thing to do. ... Its definitely frustrating. Anytime you go on the DL, it's frustrating. But its baseball, it happens. I'm going to take this time to get it right and come back ready to go."
Pearce's loss could be devastating to the offense. He's currently hitting .322 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs.
Mahtook sustained his injury after being hit by a pitch in the second inning Monday night.

Franklin will be starting his second tour with the team this season. He was recalled on June 5 after Brandon Guyer went on the DL with a left hamstring strain. He was optioned back to Durham on June 10, when the Rays reinstated Logan Forsythe from the DL.
Franklin has played in three games for the Rays, walking twice in three plate appearances. He told reporters he is ready to play virtually any position on the team if asked to do so.
Garton will also be starting his second stint with the team this season. Initially promoted from the Minors on May 25., the Rays optioned him to Durham on Thursday after he pitched 2 2/3 innings against the Mariners, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Garton went 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA in six games with the Rays.
