KANSAS CITY -- A familiar face and longtime coach will be returning to the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate this season.

After Wednesday’s announcement that Scott Thorman, Triple-A Omaha’s manager last season, will be the Minor League field coordinator in 2023, the Royals announced that Mike Jirschele will return to the Storm Chasers as manager. It’s a position he’s held before, from 1995-97 and 2003-13, and he is the winningest manager in Omaha history with 995 wins.

Jirschele was promoted to the big league staff following the 2013 season, then he was the third-base coach during the Royals’ World Series runs in '14 and '15. He’s beloved by players and his fellow coaches, and he’s etched into Kansas City history. Jirschele was also the third-base coach who decided not to send Alex Gordon home from third base in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, only to watch Gordon be stranded when Salvador Perez popped out to end the game.

This season will be Jirschele’s 32nd season with the Royals, a tenure that has included a variety of coaching roles. Last year, he was Double-A Northwest Arkansas’ bench coach.

The Royals are also keeping former bullpen coach Larry Carter in the organization, something they hoped to do when they decided against bringing him back as their MLB bullpen coach. Carter will now be the Double-A pitching coach, a role he held from 2008-12. This season will be Carter’s 29th as a coach; he was also the pitching coach in Omaha from '13-14 and the Royals’ Minor League pitching coordinator from '15-19 before being promoted to the big league staff.
