Doumit returns behind plate against Royals

Catcher's ankle issue fine; Mauer serves as designated hitter for Twins

MINNEAPOLIS -- One day after Ryan Doumit was reported to be available to the Twins if needed, the catcher was back in the lineup.

Doumit sprained his right ankle on Sunday at Cleveland in the ninth inning. On Friday, the switch-hitter batted third behind Joe Mauer, who was given DH duties with Doumit back behind the plate.

"The trainers came in and said catching would probably be the best place for him," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "There you have it. I'll listen to the trainers and we'll catch him."

Going into Friday's game against the Royals, Doumit was batting .237 with 56 hits and 35 RBIs.
