Diamond, Triple-A reinforcements set to join Twins

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins are set to add reinforcements to their short-handed bench, as the club announced seven players will be promoted from Triple-A Rochester on Monday after the Red Wings were eliminated from the International League playoffs on Sunday.

The Twins will recall infielder Eduardo Escobar, first baseman/outfielder Chris Parmelee, left-hander Scott Diamond and right-handers Michael Tonkin and Cole De Vries. Additionally, the Twins selected the contracts of catcher Eric Fryer and right-hander Shairon Martis, as right-hander Samuel Deduno (shoulder) and outfielder Wilkin Ramirez (broken left tibia) were transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for them on the 40-man roster.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was pleased to finally get September callups on the roster, especially with backup infielder Doug Bernier still out with a sore right elbow. Rochester was eliminated with a 3-0 loss to Pawtucket in Game 5 on Sunday.

"With Bernier out with his elbow right now, this will be good," Gardenhire said. "We're getting another catcher up here. [Ryan] Doumit is pretty much gonna DH and play the outfield for us the rest of the way. Same with [Josh] Willingham. But I have a backup first baseman in Parmelee now, so that'll be good."

Gardenhire also said there have been discussions about going to a six-man rotation for the rest of the season. Diamond would be the most likely candidate to start after posting a 2.41 ERA in six starts since being optioned to Rochester in early August.
