Speedy pitcher takes rundown into his own hands

August 9th, 2022

The notion that pitchers aren't athletes has been debunked more times than one can count, but if any more evidence to the contrary was needed, Bowen Plagge of the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers provided yet another example on Sunday.

Plagge, a 24-year-old right-handed reliever for the White Sox Single-A affiliate, found himself in a jam in the eighth inning of Kannapolis' game against the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C., with Mudcats center fielder Jace Avina on third and first baseman Jesus Chirinos at the plate with one out.

Plagge induced a grounder to second, and with Avina caught in no man's land, the second baseman threw behind him to third base, resulting in a rundown on the third-base line. Plagge took his turn in the pickle, getting the relay throw just in front home plate with Avina most of the way down the line. Instead of throwing the ball back to third, Plagge took matters into his own hands -- or legs.

Plagge turned on the jets and chased Avina all the way back to third, slapping the tag on him just before he slid into the bag. With one out recorded, Plagge looked up to find Chirinos stuck between second and third. As Chirinos scrambled to get back to second base, Plagge again went full Terminator, running Chirinos down himself and applying a diving tag as the runner tried in vain to reach the bag safely.

If a double play is a pitcher's best friend, then Plagge must be his own BFF, because he turned two with a heck of a play.
