A’s plan to recall Mengden for finale vs. Tribe

Khrush remains day to day with a left hip contusion

OAKLAND -- When fell short of making the starting rotation out of Spring Training, A’s manager Bob Melvin made it a point to let it be known the right-hander would get back to the Major Leagues in 2019. Now looking to get Mike Fiers an extra day of rest after throwing 131 pitches in his no-hitter on Tuesday, Mengden is getting his chance.

The A’s will call up Mengden from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Sunday’s final game of a three-game series with the Indians. It’s a promotion Melvin said Mengden has earned after compiling a 2.77 ERA over seven games, with a 44-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 39 innings.

“He’s pitched really well and we knew he’d be here at some point in time,” Melvin said. “We try to keep as many guys as we can in the fold to begin with, and, you know, you’ll need some depth as the season goes along. There comes a point where a guy is pitching well and you need to get him up here. I think that’s the case for him right now.”

Mengden played a key role in the A’s 2018 run to the playoffs when he often followed “opener” Liam Hendriks in September, posting a 2.52 ERA over his final six games.

Davis out again

Melvin was hoping to get slugger back in the lineup on Friday, but he remains day to day with lingering effects from his left hip contusion.

“I was trying to be optimistic, but sometimes these things take a few days,” Melvin said. “He didn’t really do anything yesterday. We’re trying to get him as healthy as we can, and today is not that day.”

Since sustaining the injury in Pittsburgh on Sunday, Davis has only played in one game, which came on Wednesday when he went 0-for-1 with a walk before getting pulled after five innings.

The A’s will hold off on placing him on the injured list as long as they can.

“It’s not something we want to do,” Melvin said of a potential IL stint. “Even if he came back on the eighth day, it’s something we’re going to hold out. He’s just so important to the team that you want to get every day that you can out of him. We’ll try to be patient with it.”

The A’s have missed Davis’ power. He’s gone without a home run since April 12, and the club as a whole has only hit 16 total homers since that date, the least amount in the American League over that time. They are also 0-14 this season in games in which they fail to hit a home run.
