Call Professor X. “El Mutante” is on the loose at Double-A.
Leo De Vries showcased his out-of-this world talent on Saturday night. MLB’s No. 4 prospect posted his first three-hit game of the season in Midland’s 7-6 victory over Frisco in 11 innings at Riders Field.
The performance upped the switch-hitting phenom’s hit streak to five games for the RockHounds and marked his second multihit contest of the year. Through eight games, De Vries has compiled a slash line of .290/.405/.323.
With left-hander Dylan MacLean (Rangers) on the mound for the RoughRiders, De Vries’ first two knocks of the game came from the right side of the dish. He hammered a hanging breaking ball down the left-field line for a double in the third and followed it up with a sizzled RBI single in the fourth that ate up shortstop Keyber Rodriguez. His lone hit from the left came on a ground ball through the right side in the eighth off righty Ricardo Velez.
COMPLETE ATHLETICS PROSPECT COVERAGE
Coveted for his mature 6-foot frame and innate hitting ability -- hence the “El Mutante” nickname -- De Vries was the No. 2 prospect in the 2024 international class (second to Roki Sasaki). The Padres aggressively pushed his development before dealing the 19-year-old shortstop to the Athletics in exchange for Mason Miller prior to last year’s Trade Deadline.

Since arriving in the Athletics system, their top prospect has performed as advertised. Last season, De Vries posted an .806 OPS with 15 homers and 11 steals while regularly facing off against older competition. Seven of those big flies came in the 36 games after the trade.
This year, De Vries introduced himself to A’s fans at Spring Training. Over 47 at-bats with the big league club, the Dominican Republic native slashed .426/.460/.723 with three homers -- two of which came in the March 8 game against the Dodgers.
In 2025, De Vries tallied 31 multihit games. Eight of those performances consisted of three or more knocks.
Mark down Saturday as his first three-hit night of 2026.
